On the Unipotent Support of Character Sheaves

چکیده
Let G be a connected reductive group over Fq, where q is large enough and the center of G is connected. We are concerned with Lusztig’s theory of character sheaves, a geometric version of the classical character theory of the finite group G(Fq). We show that under a certain technical condition, the restriction of a character sheaf to its unipotent support (as defined by Lusztig) is either zero or an irreducible local system. As an application, the generalized Gelfand-Graev characters are shown to form a Z-basis of the Z-module of unipotently supported virtual characters of G(Fq) (Kawanaka’s conjecture). Dedicated to Professors Ken-ichi Shinoda and Toshiaki Shoji on their 60th birthday

Character Sheaves on Disconnected Groups
Throughout this paper, G denotes a fixed, not necessarily connected, reductive algebraic group over an algebraically closed field k with a fixed connected component D which generates G. This paper is a part of a series [L9] which attempts to develop a theory of character sheaves on D. Our main result here is the classification of ”unipotent” character sheaves on D (under a mild assumption on th...
متن کاملCharacter Sheaves and Characters of Unipotent Groups over Finite Fields
Let G0 be a connected unipotent group over a finite field Fq, and let G = G0 ⊗Fq Fq, equipped with the Frobenius endomorphism Frq : G −→ G. For every character sheaf M on G such that Frq M ∼= M , we prove that M comes from an irreducible perverse sheaf M0 on G0 such that M0 is pure of weight 0 (as an `-adic complex) and for each integer n ≥ 1 the “trace of Frobenius” function tM0⊗FqFqn on G0(Fq...

متن کاملCharacter Values, Schur Indices and Character Sheaves
In this paper we are concerned with the problem of determining the character values and Schur indices of a finite group of Lie type over Fq. We show that (under some conditions on q) these values lie in the ring of algebraic integers generated by (1 + ñq)/2 and roots of unity of order prime to q. Furthermore, we determine the Schur indices for some of the (nonrational) unipotent characters in ...
متن کاملSome Properties of Character Sheaves
In 1986, George Lusztig stated some interesting properties of character sheaves with non-zero restriction to the unipotent variety and proved them for the group SO2n+1(Fq) under the assumption that the characteristic p of Fq is good. In February 1992, the author has given lectures on that proof of Lusztig in the Seminar “Faisceaux Caractères” at the École Normale Supérieure and it was no doubt ...
